What is a Doula?

A Doula is a trained and experienced woman who helps families to prepare for, and accompany them during labour and birth. She draws on experience and knowledge to help couples achieve their desired birth goals.

A Doula works for you. She can provide you with information about options for labour and birth. She can facilitate  communication with care providers about your birth choices , helping you become an active participant in the decision making process. 

Doulas can make suggestions to help labour progress. Such as positioning, providing hands-on comfort techniques, assisting with breathing exercises, making suggestions for hydrotherapy etc. 

There are many benefits to having a Doula present at your birth. Recent studies have shown that the presence of a Doula can result in:

• A shorter more productive labour.
  
• A reduction in the need for medical interventions including: vacuum, forceps and caesarean section.
  
• A reduction in the use of pain medications such as narcotics and epidurals.
  
• Improved breastfeeding success and a longer duration of breastfeeding.

What is included in your birth package:

• Two prenatal meetings to define your needs and desires for your birth, to understand our expectations of one another and to provide you with useful tools for labour and birth. 
  
• Access to our lending library of books and videos about pregnancy, birth and baby care to support your learning.
  
• Unlimited phone and e-mail support to answer your questions and offer suggestions and support throughout your pregnancy and early labour.
  
• On-call for you 24/7 two weeks prior to your due date until the birth of your baby.
  
• Continuous physical, mental and emotional support for you and your partner for the duration of labour and birth, to help you move towards the vision you created for your baby's birth.
  
• Initial breastfeeding and postpartum support for 1-2 hours following your birth.
  
• One follow up visit at your home to celebrate the birth of your baby and to answer any questions you have during the early postpartum period about breastfeeding, postpartum adjustment, newborn care and community services.
  
• Unlimited phone and e-mail support for two weeks following your birth to answer any questions and offer suggestions
